Masking Tape Shoes
by Korey Nelson
The shoes were very difficult to make; the process took several weeks and after making just two masking tape shoes, it became clear that shoes require a greater deal of patience and attention to detail than I was previously accustomed to. This assignment was very great as an introduction to the 3D class; it taught me that the work becomes easier the more time you spend and the more attention to detail you provide. The shoes were an excellent step in my 3D progression and led to a formulation of a structured method to expressing space in the third dimension.
The first pair of shoes was a draft shoe; it was crafted from masking tape and paper, an exercise meant to give us a basic understanding of how a shoe works. From there, the process became more complicated; my second pair of shoes concerned the binding and material thickness of panels, how well the panels fit together, and how much detail I had to sacrifice in order to achieve a level of structural stability.
The second pair of shoes was made from masking tape entirely. The issue here became getting the shoe panels to stick together, leading to many different methods of joinery and panel bending. The result could not have been better; though the detail of the shoes lacks some texture and dimension of the original pair, the shape, size, and structure were all fairly accurate and succeeded as an adequate copy of the original pair.
