Making Balsa Wood Sculptures
by Korey Nelson
An artistic expression of overcrowding and a lack of vegetation, my first sculpture utilized various scrap materials to create an architectural form that conveyed a sense of claustrophobia.
Materials: Green card stock paper, poplar dowels, scrap plywood, glue, metal pins
Dimensions: 4" x 5" x 8"

The second sculpture worked to convey a sense of free falling adolescent wonder through the wild a livatious mass of circular paper tubes adorned with creative designs of marker and sawdust. The tether acts as a probe connecting the adolescent mind to the real world where rational reigns supreme. This piece was a little more lighthearted and aimed to create a playful emotion through the handling of the sculpture; the form is reminiscent of a children's toy and it is encouraged you swing the form around in your hand.
Material: Grey cardstock paper, glue, saw dust, marker, masking tape
Dimensions: 4" x 6" x 9.5"
An abandoned idea: This was my original form for the second structure, but it worked as a rough draft due to the inclusion of prefabricated materials and items.
